CACGEC Candidates’ Forum, August 16, 2005 |
Steve Calvaneso, Judith Einach , Charles Flynn, Kevin Gaughan, and Kevin Helfer attended CACGEC’s Candidates Forum on August 16. Byron Brown declined our invitation.
Here is a brief summary of the candidates’ positions on casino gambling:

Steve Calveneso is opposed to a Buffalo casino. As a business owner he has spoken to colleagues in other cities, including Niagara Falls, NY who tell him that casinos have unequivocally hurt his businesses.
Judith Einach is opposed to a Buffalo casino. She has met with experts and studied the issues, and has visited Detroit and other cities where casinos are making the economy worse, not better.
Charles Flynn believes a city casino could be positive and that it would capture tourist dollars.
Kevin Gaughan is opposed to a casino in Buffalo. He has studied the material CACGEC has provided and believes that a casino would be a detriment to our economic growth.

Kevin Helfer is in favor of casino “gaming”. He believes it is all around us anyway and that a Buffalo casino will capture gambling dollars that otherwise go to nearby gambling venues.
(Note: Research done at UB by John Welte has demonstrated that as the number of casinos in an area increases the greater the rate of gambling addiction. CACGEC believes that a Buffalo casino would rely almost exclusively on local patrons and would lead to a significant increase in gambling addiction among our citizens)
